Riding a motorcycle can be a fun and rewarding way to get around town. Over the last 30 years, owning a motorcycle has become a huge hobby for many people. With increased motorcycles, there is always going to be an increase in the number of motorcycle accidents.

There are many dangers to riding a motorcycle. Listed below are common causes of motorcycle crashes.

Failure to See

Motorcycle riders face many of the same dangers that all road users encounter. However, there is one danger that is very unique to motorcycles. Many motorcycle accidents are caused by other drivers failing to see the motorcyclist.

Many motorcycle accidents are caused by other drivers not seeing an oncoming motorcyclist and either pulling out in front of them or making a turn in front of them. Because of the low stature of a bike, many drivers are not specifically looking for that type of vehicle. This is one of the reasons why most states require motorcycles to have their front headlight on at all times. There are also some motorcycles that even have an option to have the front headlight flash while the bike is in motion.

Hazardous Road Conditions

People who only drive in cars and trucks do not really think about road conditions. However, motorcyclists are more vulnerable to hazardous road conditions, such as potholes. If a motorcyclist does not see a large or deep pothole in time, the rider could easily lose control of the motorcycle and crash.

A motorcyclist can also lose control on roadways that have a deep drop off on the side of the pavement. If a motorcycle hits that drop off, the motorcycle and the rider could go careening off the road. When the roads are wet either during or after a heavy rain, the slickness of the road can be difficult for any type of vehicle, especially a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Lane Splitting

Lane splitting is when a motorcycle drives between two lanes of cars. This is typically done during slow or stopped traffic. Because the motorcyclist is traveling between drivers in a very small space, it does not allow much wiggle room for mistakes. All it takes is a car to weave into the space between the vehicles and the bike will flip the rider.
