By 2025, older drivers will represent almost 25 percent of the driving population. There are many risks for elderly drivers. Some common causes of elderly driver-related car accidents include:

  • Limited range of motion.
  • Weaker muscles and reduced flexibility.
  • Reduced cognitive function, affecting the driver’s reaction time.
  • Reduced ability to navigate a traffic hazard.
  • Diminished ability to follow traffic rules.
  • Decreased vision or hearing, making it difficult for drivers to see other cars, traffic signs, or hear emergency sirens.
  • Injuries or illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis that can affect functionality.
  • Prescription or over-the-counter medication can cause drowsiness and other adverse conditions.

Driving allows older adults to stay independent, maintain a social life, and improve their physical and mental health. Fortunately, there are ways older adults can stay safe on the road and keep their driving privileges. Some safety tips include:

  • Always wear a seat belt. Be sure to wear your seat belt, regardless of the length of the drive. Seat belts have been proven to be one of the best ways to save lives and reduce crash injuries.
  • Do not drink and drive. Drinking and driving is one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol drastically reduces your coordination, judgement, and can make you drowsy.
  • Only drive in optimal road conditions. Driving in daylight and good weather is safer than driving at night and in poor weather conditions. If possible, it is also safer to drive during non-peak hours when there is less traffic.
  • Avoid distractions. Distracted driving is another top cause of car accidents. Reduce distractions as much as possible by locking your phone away before driving. Also, you should keep your radio at a low volume.
  • Go to doctor’s appointments. It is important to visit your doctor regularly to prevent or treat any illnesses that could impair your health or driving abilities. Consider visiting your eye doctor at least once a year, and wear the right glasses.
  • Review medications. Consult with your doctor about the medications you are taking and their side effects.
